Aug. 16, 2010 (United Press International) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has cited a South Carolina nuclear power plant for two safety-related violations, officials said.
Duke Energy's Oconee nuclear station at Seneca was cited by inspectors for violations related to the plant's shutdown systems, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Monday.
The systems are intended to safely shut down the plant's reactors when normal and emergency systems aren't working, the newspaper said.
A "yellow" violation, for an issue with substantial safety significance, was issued to Duke by the NRC for failing to make sure the standby shutdown systems could be used.
A "white" violation of low to moderate safety significance was given for Duke's failure to find and correct degradation in the standby systems of two reactors after the problem was found in a third unit.
The agency, which will do extra inspections and could take other measures, said it would determine the "most appropriate regulatory response" for the violations, the Observer reported.
