U.S. picks AECOM for Afghanistan work

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A U.S. program for increasing people's confidence in district-level government in Afghanistan is to be implemented by AECOM Technology Corp.

AECOM, a California provider of technical and management support services, said the contract it received from the U.S. Agency for International Development is for the Afghanistan Stability in Key Areas-East program.

The award, which is for 18 months with an 18-month option, is worth as much as $177 million.

The SIKA-East program aims to aid Afghanistan's national government expand its authority and legitimacy through its provincial representatives.

AECOM said it will work with USAID to help provincial and district officials utilize government, donor and military resources for local programs and infrastructure projects to boost resident confidence and improve local stability.

The districts where the program will be implemented will be chosen by the Afghan government and U.S. government, AECOM said.

AECOM, through a social outreach program, had in the past helped establish 130 district councils in the mainly rural country where U.S., coalition and government forces are fighting the Taliban.
